Further religious control imposed in central Tibet

Bilingual history books distributed while monks and nuns forced to write their names on the banner of good monks and nuns

On the morning of 7 May, a series of “Party history” propaganda activities were held at Dorje Drak monastery located in Gongkar County (Ch: Gongga), Lhokha City, Tibet Autonomous Region. Dengbo, Deputy Secretary of the County Party Committee, and Sheng Jiumei, Director of the Propaganda Department oversaw the forced event during which monks, nuns, and cadre representatives were ordered to keep firm faith and follow the Party line.

Throughout the event titled ''Learning Party History, Reciting Classics, and Exhibition Style'', the forced attendees were told to look back on what was ironically described as the party’s past “suffering”, glorify the Chinese Communist Party, and interpret the manufactured course of history into firm belief towards the party.

At the event, Chinese officials distributed selected Tibetan-Chinese bilingual history books and everyone was asked to study and understand the CCP's history.

In the patriotic signature activity, monks and nuns of the monastery were forced to write  their names on the banner which read ''Good monks and nuns who appreciate the favor of the party, listen to the party, follow the party.''

The sinicisation of Tibetan Buddhism has been prioritised as a five-year policy for the CCP in Tibet following the 7th Central Tibet Work Forum, a high-level meeting that was held in Beijing from 29 to 30 August 2020. Since then Tibetan monasteries have come under ever more pressure to implement President Xi Jinping's speech at theWork Forum. “Party history” campaigns organised in Tibetan monasteries are a culmination of more than six decades of CCP’s systematic repression of Tibetan’s right to freedom of religion.
