No government aid sent to flooded Tibetan villages

Houses, crops and livestock have been severely affected by the floods.

Since 6 August, the region of Mangra County in Tsolho Prefecture, eastern Tibet, has been seriously affected by severe rainfall and hailstorms.

The severe weather conditions have caused flooding and the destruction of property, as well as massive landslides. The heavy floods have reportedly washed away houses, destroyed the crops of the season and caused the death of many livestock. 

Meanwhile, the overflowing of Machu (Yellow River), caused by the heavy rainfall, also poses a serious threat to the safety of many villages in the downstream region. 

No rescue or government aid has been sent to the affected areas of Tibet. 

Sources in the region sent a video where we can see houses being overrun by floods and a person shouting:

"Where is the Chinese government? The flood has washed away my house and I have been waiting for your assistance, but where have you gone now when it matters?"

Contrastingly, the Chinese government quickly mobilized flood relief efforts in eastern China when floods occurred in that region in late July. 

The Chinese government’s lack of desire or action to assist Tibetans has also been reflected in the shortage of employment opportunities for Tibetans, as well as the rushed relaxation of the recent COVID-19 lockdown in Tibet. 

The heavy rainfall and constant natural calamity are becoming a recurring feature in the Tibetan plateau region, due to the unnatural destruction of Tibet’s environment, such as massive dam building, construction, and mining.
