Chinese Communist Party grows its ranks in Tibet

Control on Tibet to be strengthened following the ‘Two Sessions’ meeting.

Whilst global efforts have been focused on fighting the COVID-19 virus, the Chinese government’s attention has been on reinforcing the fundamentals of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) led by Xi Jinping.

The Chinese authorities are working on strengthening its control in Tibet. The recent Two Sessions meeting saw a renewed emphasis on the anti-separatism campaign, stability and a call for absolute loyalty by the Tibetan people to the Chinese president Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

In this Two Sessions meeting, which was held from 21 to 28 May, the Party demanded that:

“faithfulness to the core leadership of the Party is characterised by the staunch loyalty to the Communist Party of China Central Committee, its general secretary Xi Jinping as well as to the Party theories, guidelines, principles and policies.”

In a Chinese state-owned media news report, the CCP boasts that in 2019 alone, there has been a significant increase in the number of the Party members in Tibet. The report claims that there were 16,000 Party members in Tibet in the beginning of 2019, out of which 8000 were from farmer-nomadic backgrounds. At the end of the 2019, there were 398,000 new party members, out of which 196,000 were from the farmer-nomadic backgrounds. The report also claims that the Party recruited 2000 new members in the Tibetan border areas.

The CCP’s control over the Tibetan borders have become more prevalent than ever with China’s recent border stand off with the Indian army. This has been taking place at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh, wherein 20 lives were lost on the Indian side of the border, whilst the Beijing government has been making concerted attempts on its full swing to expand its territory in the South China Sea as well. At the Ladakh border where the recent standoff happened, Xi’s government has deployed professional Mixed Martial Art fighters at the line of actual control.
