The Lhasa City Buddhist Association issued a notice on 30 March announcing the reopening of temples and monasteries in and around Lhasa amidst Tibet’s recovery from the coronavirus.

The notice said 214 monasteries were set to reopen for prayers and blessings to members of the public who can provide health certificates and citizen cards. Barring Sera, Drepung, Gaden and Jokhang temples were among the religious sites named.

Restaurants, hotels, and other businesses have reportedly also begun to operate in Lhasa, while travel agencies based in the city like ‘Tibet Vista’ have launched discounted Tibet tour packages.

Flights are landing in the country, Chinese workers have started arriving in at least one area of eastern Tibet and children are going back to school.

The news indicates a recovery from coronavirus but some Tibetans are still concerned the outbreak will return as increasing numbers of tourists and workers come back to the country.
