Square outside Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple closed for worshippers

Worshipers blocked from square near Jokhang Temple whist tourists were still allowed in.

Authorities have barred worshippers from a square in front of Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple since it was renovated, Free Tibet’s research partner Tibet Watch reported on 7 October.

Following two months of construction work in the square, the site has been fenced off with worshippers barred from going in, according to Tibet Watch.

Meanwhile tourists are able to visit, Radio Free Asia said.

The square holds a significance for Tibetan Buddhists as a site where some pray, worship and gather.
In August, Free Tibet reported that Tibetan visitors to Jokhang Temple, which is generally considered to be the most sacred temple in Tibet, are screened by authorities. Tibetan government workers, school children and retirees are banned from going into the temple entirely whilst Chinese tourists are still allowed to enter.
